Professional development of our teachers in Denmark
Autor: Andreja Remar Vidrač, 12. 8. 2015.

As a part of the project called „Integration of special needs children and improvement of ICT technologies usage in 6th Primary School“ in ERASMUS+ programme for area of general education and teaching  (Activity KA1 – mobility with the purpose of learning for an individual) teachers Martina Kučar, Nina Prašnjak and Marija Selak and principle Mario Stančić spent three weeks in Denmark.

Job shadowing took place in Primary School Christinelystskolen in the town of Lemvig. They had teacher training there, researched the Danish school system, planning of lessons, studied the teaching methods, aims and goals, ways of evaluating and grading and took part in the teaching process. They particularly focused on the work done with children with special needs in Danish schools and usage of information and communication technology in the classroom.

Every day the teachers and principle were present during classes and witnessed how teachers teach and how children with special needs are integrated in class. They noticed that pupils are happy and satisfied and they like learning and going to school. They often use computers in class - they are avilable to every one during every class. All classrooms are equipped with smart boards, and pupils often learn new topics through games and songs. Quite often pupils in a single classroom, divided in several groups, study different topics during the same class, and what makes this possible is the fact that both the teacher and the pedagogue are present in the classroom at the same time. Every day pupils spend one hour  in the school playground where they do sports, walk around the lake, or play. They do this even if it is raining or cold.

During their three-weeks stay in Denmark, teachers and the principle of 6th Primary School had the opportunity to meet the Danish culture and customs. Danish people were very kind hosts, pleasant, relaxed, open and have a great sense of humour. Denmark is a really beautiful country with lovely plains, lakes, green fields, red houses with big windows, windmills, woods, meadows, fjords and sand beaches of the North Sea. Every free moment was used for getting to know the country and people so they also visited the town of Aarhus, the Legoland as well as the capital Copenhagen.

One of the goals of this project was to plan the future cooperation with Christinelystskolen and several different projects were agreed upon to be done during this school year. They brought new knowledge, experience and ideas back home from Denmark. Back in Varaždin, teachers and the principle presented the danish school system and their experience to their colleagues, and organized interactive workshops for pupils.
