Autor: Andreja Remar Vidrač, 19. 9. 2015.

From 7 to 11 September 2015  the employees of 6th Primary School Varaždin hosted teachers from Wielun, Poland.

Cooperation with teachers from Poland started in September 2014 when 7 teachers from 6th Primary School Varaždin, the principle  Mario Stančić and Head of Department of Social Services  of the town of Varaždin, Danijela Vusić, visited the town of Wielun and witnessed their inauguration of the beginning of the school year 2014/15, and  the memorial of the attack on Wielun in World War II. Contacts were made with primary and secondary schools in Wielun. After we returned to Croatia, one of these secondary schools contacted us about cooperation and exchanging experience.

They invited us to come to a friendly and professional visit, so teachers from 6th Primary School visited secondary school - Liceum from Wielun  in May 2015. 6 teachers from 6th Primary School Varaždin together with the principle Mario Stančić, the principle of the Secondary school Ludbreg Josip Zdelar, and the Polish language teacher Vanda Jezernik travelled on the second visit to Wielun, Poland. They learned about ways of teaching and student activities at the Liceum, about the education system and teacher training in Poland. Wielun is a town with about 27,000 inhabitants, a children-friendly town that takes part in many projects and a town rich in cultural and historical sights. It is also considered the place where World War II started. It is situated in the south of Poland. We invited the teachers from Secondary school in Poland to visit us in Varaždin and to meet our school and heritage.

So, what marked the first week of school in this school year 2015/16 was the visit of eight teachers employed in the Secondary School – Liceum from Wielun to 6th Primary School Varaždin.

The aim of the visit was to learn about the school system in the Republic of Croatia, to exchange teaching experience and to build cooperation between the schools in several levels: sports, culture, different projects, etc. The teachers exchanged teaching experience, learned about the organization and teaching conditions, as well as education of teachers and teacher training in Croatia.  Secondary School teachers from Wielun were present in class where they saw the examples of good teaching practice. They liked the way teachers in 6th Primary School Varaždin teach and the educational system in the Republic of Croatia. The principle of the Secondary School from Poland, Zbigniew Wisniewski,  showed his impressive basketball skills, and some of the teachers spent time in science classes, biology, chemistry, physical education, English language….

Teachers from Poland also learned about culture, customs and sights in Croatia. When they first came to Varaždin they were taken sightseeing in the old centre of the town of Varaždin, which really impressed them, especially the tower and the forts of the Old Town Castle. They visited the Enthomology exhibition of the Varaždin Town Museum showing the collection of insects and the historical exhibition in the Old Town Castle of the Varaždin Town Museum. On their second day in Croatia they were in the centre of Ludbreg, visiting the Secondary School Ludbreg  and the restauration centre. On the same day they visited the Trakošćan Castle where they travelled in time  to past luxurious life of counts Drašković and walked around the lake.

Teachers from Wielun wanted to see the Adriatic Sea as well. They spent a day in Crikvenica, with a trip to the island of Krk. In Krk they walked around the old town centre of Krk. They really loved the part od the Adriatic  which they saw, as well as the sea itself, in which they swam for a short time. The following day they visited the Aquarium in Crikvenica where they saw the  rich underwater life of the Adriatic.

On thier way back to Varaždin they visited Zagreb, the Croatian capital. They saw the Zagreb Cathedral and a tour guide took them around the Upper Town. They found St. Mark's Square impressive.

Varaždin's food company Vindija also welcomed the Polish teachers. The teachers learned about the way of production of milk products and tasted some products made by „Vindija“.

The visit of Polish teachers ended on 11 September in Varaždin Town Hall and in  County Palace where the mayor Goran Habuš and vice-county-mayor Alen Kišić received the Polish delegation. Goran Habuš, the mayor of Varaždin, pointed out that cooperation of teachers, exchange of students, acquiring new experiences, learning about culture and making friendships are good ways of continuing cooperation and ensuring the joined European future. Vice-county-mayor Alen Kišić  told the guests that they visited the county which invests in the quality of education and can be proud of many positive projects.

On their last day in Varaždin, the principle of the Secondary School from Wielun, Zbigniew Wisniewski,  pointed out that  their trip was short, but they saw and experienced a lot.
