Competencies for the 21st century
Autor: Andreja Remar Vidrač, 16. 1. 2017.

Three of our teachers – Aleksandra Oreški (teacher of grades 1-4), Mihaela Vrbnjak Grđan (chemistry and biology teacher) and Ivana Canjuga (Croatian language teacher) – took part in the teachers' mobility project in Graz.

Studying the Austrian educational system in the Erasmus+ students' mobility project (activity KA1 – mobility for the purpose of learning for individuals)

As a part of Project Erasmus+ (activity KA1 – mobility for the purpose of learning for individuals), mobility of teachers, our three teachers stayed in Graz from 9 – 24 October 2016 in order to learn about some new teaching methods and compare the Austrian and the Croatian educational systems.

Bilingual Primary School 'Volksschule BIPSKrones' – a bilingual primary school with students from different parts of the world

Our teachers were guests in 'Volksschule BIPSKrones' in which all activities for this project took place. The school has about 50 teachers, teaching assistents and external cooperants, and is attended by about 220 students. It is a bilingual primary school with 10 classes, two or three parallel classes in each generation. Children come from all parts of the world, so about 30 different languages can be heard in the school (German, English, Croatian, Bosnian, Cameroon, Japanese, Egyptian, etc.). In the Austrian educational system each class can have up to 25 students. There are two teachers in each classroom, especially in integrated classes which include children with special forms of education. This is a primary school, teaching grades 1-4, so children have four or five lessons per day, with breaks between each lesson which they spend outside in the playground regardless of weather conditions, and after classes they either go home or they can stay in school whole day (parents have to pay for that). In that case children do their homework in school, play, and do sports or some other activities. Staying in school whole day is co-financed by the city of Graz, so parents don't have to pay the whole amount. Each student also gets 100 euros for school books, and teachers try to choose class books within that amount. Regina Pock, the principle, and other teachers of this school tried hard to make our teachers feel comfortable during their stay in Graz. Our teachers also visited two more schools: NMS (Neue Mittelschule) Algersdorf and NMS (Neue Mittelschule Graz) St. Leonhard. Children go to NMS after they finish primary school, from the age of 10 to 14-15. The NMS school lasts for four years, but children can attend it for 5 years. After that they can enroll a comprehensive school, a high school or go to work. Children start school at the age of six.

Besides learning about education in Austria and sightseeing in Graz, our teachers also presented Croatia, Varaždin and 6th Primary School Varaždin through two 'Croatian Days'. During their first week in Graz the teachers had a presentation of some short films about Varaždin and 6th Primary School Varaždin, as well as Professor Baltazar cartoons, for students and teachers. Mihaela Vrbnjak Grđan made chemical experiments wearing a folk costume of Zagorje, int his way combining the modern with the traditional. Teachers also wore folk costumes when they presented traditional Croatian food such as štrukli, gibanica, klipići, corn bread and much more. Folk costumes were lent to our teachers by the Folklore Society of Beretinec and their leader Krešimir Plantak. Nine teachers led by the princile Mario Stančić came for a visit to Graz one day. Cooperation between the schools does not end there, but continues. Our Austrian coleagues are coming to visit our school in February or March 2017 during our Healthy Week project.
